Tornadoes strike for three runs in sixth to get past St. Mary's
Ty Zimmerman belted a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie and help give Storm Lake a 4-1 victory over cross-town rival Storm Lake St. Mary's in the first round of the Storm Lake Invitational softball tournament on Saturday.
Storm Lake was to play Denison-Schleswig in the championship game on Saturday night, but that game was canceled because of rain.
Storm Lake, now 3-1 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Heather Storm singled and later scored on a double by Zimmerman.
St. Mary's tied it at 1-1 in the third inning. Michelle Drey and Jessica Lussman each drew a walk. Kassie Drey followed with a single to score Michelle Drey.
The Panthers had a runner picked off third base just before a single by Maddie Rust.
Storm Lake had a runner thrown out at the plate and one at second base in the fifth inning, and had a runner thrown out at home and another at third base in the sixth.
With two outs in the sixth, Storm and Molly Daniels each singled.
