Members of the Buena Vista County Jail Task Force learned quickly that looking into future options for the jail means more than just finding more cell space. Any decisions made regarding the jail affect other county departments, too.
"We feel we have to do more than just look at the jail," said Bill Strawn of Storm Lake, chair of the task force. "There are more departments than just that that we need to look at."
Members of the task force will work in smaller committees to pull together facts and figures about other county departments and their needs now and in the future, Strawn said.
"We're going to go beyond just the jail and look at the entire facilities for the courthouse," he said.
Those sub-committees will contact department heads for an assessment of needs, while also looking at alternate facilities in the community, Strawn said. It would be premature to say those buildings would be for jail use, though.
"The committee would look at those numbers and see how they might be used," he said.
Also, the task force will meet with members of the court to find out what that system expects to need in the future.
