Buena Vista County Public Health and Homecare, along with Trimark Physicians Group and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, are being recognized for their efforts to bring healthcare to those who cannot afford it.
The trio of healthcare providers composes one of four community groups across the state receiving the 2003 Iowa Community Health Prize, sponsored by Iowa Health System and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
The Iowa Community Health Prize has been presented since 1995 and grants $6,000 to the community-based voluntary projects. The four awards are based on a number of criteria and are presented to four groups serving different numbers of people.
Buena Vista County Public Health and Homecare, Trimark Physicians Group and BVRMC are receiving the award for a tuberculosis clinic that offers reduced-fee medical evaluations to children and adults with a positive tuberculosis skin test and who have no health insurance and limited financial resources.
Renea Seagren, coordinator of the program for Public Health, said the program started to keep children in school. The Storm Lake School District requires all children to be tested for TB before enrolling.
