SLHS celebrates academic successes for 131 grads
Hundreds of pupils in the Class of 2003 added the words "former Storm Lake High School student" to their resumes this past weekend, receiving their treasured diplomas in front of hundreds of parents, relatives and friends.
A total of 131 pupils walked across the stage inside the SLHS gym on Sunday, the highlight of a Commencement ceremony which included speeches, music and recognition of those who achieved noteworthy academic success over the past four years.
Senior class president Lisa Bowman presided over the first half of the ceremony, introducing student speakers Val DeLao, Kristin Matasovsky and Stacy Schmidt, Tyler Parson and Andrew Whitlatch. Parson received a standing ovation for his original guitar composition, while the four other students speakers also received applause from the audience.
The ceremony featured a number of musical selections from Tornado ensembles, as the concert band, concert choir, chamber choir and chamber orchestra all performed musical numbers for the crowd.
SLSD superintendent Dr. Bill Kruse and other school officials used the occasion to recognize a number of students who excelled in the classroom, including seven who recorded perfect 4.0 grade point averages throughout high school careers.
