Tornado pair win in straight sets to advance to state meet
Christina Brink is going back to the state girls tennis tournament. This time she's taking Lisa DeMan with her.
The Storm Lake tandem qualified for the state tournament by winning the championship at No. 1 doubles in a Class 1A regional individual tournament played last Thursday in Storm Lake.
Brink and DeMan beat Melissa Nensel and Lauren Wilkerson of Spencer 7-5, 6-0 in the finals. They won their semifinal match 6-3, 6-0 over Amber Lux and Amber Manning of LeMars.
Brink and DeMan won 6-0, 6-0 over Anne Alesch and Randee Kastner of Denison in the second round and won 6-3, 6-4 in the first round over Jess Ahern and Megan Lewis of Spencer.
"The girls just kept getting stronger as the day went on," Storm Lake coach Beau Ruleaux said. "By the time we got to the finals, both girls were firing on all pistons. It was great to see and a lot of fun. I am real proud and happy for the girls."
The No. 2 doubles team of Heather Storm and Natalie Gamache won their first-round match, but then lost their next match and were eliminated.
Christina Otto and Ashley Huston both suffered losses in the first round of singles play and were eliminated.
