Iowa's top coffeehouse owners to be honored at Abner Bell's event

Tuesday, May 27, 2003

Cyndy and Joe Coppola, owners of Java Joes Coffeehouse in Des Moines, will be honored for having Iowa's No. 1 coffeehouse at a reception Wednesday morning, May 28, in Storm Lake.

Java Joes, founded by the Coppolas in 1992 in the historic Court Avenue District of Des Moines, was selected as Iowa's best in a contest sponsored by Iowa writer Chuck Offenburger and Abner Bell's Coffeehouse, where Offenburger is among the frequent customers.

Readers of the Internet site www.Offenburger.com were asked to nominate their favorite coffeehouses in Iowa. In April and early May, Offenburger and Abner Bell's owner Mark Redenbaugh made sampling visits to 44 coffeehouses in 27 Iowa communities.

The owners of the winning coffeehouse and the person who nominated it were then invited to be overnight guests in Storm Lake's Metcalf House Bed & Breakfast. The Coppolas will do that Tuesday evening, although Des Moines food writer Jim Duncan Jr., who nominated Java Joes in the contest, is unable to make the trip now.

Early Wednesday morning, Offenburger and Redenbaugh will give the Coppolas a tour of Storm Lake. The reception honoring them will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Abner Bell's, hosted "by all of us Abner's regulars," Offenburger said. The public is invited.

Coppolas will briefly tell their business story and their thoughts about what makes a good coffeehouse.

Offenburger's coffeehouse stories are available in his "Life on the Lakeshore" columns on the Internet site www.Offenburger.com.
