Kiwanians make waves with a sailing academy

Tuesday, May 27, 2003

The Storm Lake HyNoon Kiwanis Club has founded the Kiwanis Community Sailing Club to provide true community sailing on beautiful Storm Lake.

The program grows out of Community Education's sailing program. Community Ed donated its five sailboats to the Kiwanis' "Learn to Sail" program. The insurance carried by the Kiwanis Club makes a sailing program under it more affordable and more accessible to the community at large.

There is a multifaceted approach to the sailing program, including youth education programs, free sailboat rides for community members, and free boat rentals to skilled sailors.

The goal is simple - to make sailing available to the whole community.

"We have mustered a group of Kiwanis and community sailors willing to volunteer their time to get as many people on the water as possible," said Rick Peterson, Commodore for the Kiwanis Community Sailing Club.

Free rides will be available for anyone who is interested, which will include free hands-on, on-the-water instruction to community members and visitors.

In addition, the Kiwanis are offering a "Learn to Sail" course for both youth and adults. Four daytime sessions aimed at youth have been announced, and an evening course for adults is in the works.
