Nemaha resident Justin Mason, a 2003 graduate of Storm Lake High School, was recently recognized for his achievements in the classroom at two separate awards ceremonies by Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Mason was honored at the 2003 Governor's Scholar Recognition Program on April 27 in Des Moines, and then returned to Des Moines on May 6 for the State of Iowa Scholars Awards Ceremony. Mason was one of 450 students who received $400 scholarships through the State of Iowa Scholar Program.

State of Iowa Scholars rank on average in the top three percent of their class and have composite scores of at least 29 on their ACT exams.

Mason has also accepted a 2003 National Merit Scholarship from Iowa State University in Ames, which covers tuition, room and board for four years. As part of the composite award package Mason has also been named a George Washington Carver Scholar, one of the most prominent awards Iowa State bestows on incoming college freshmen.
