Gigantic balloons add 'Spectacular' flair to parade
Giant character balloons similar to those immortalized by the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City will appear for the first time in Storm Lake during this summer's special 25th anniversary of the Star Spangled Spectacular.
Commodores Barb and Ed Anderson report that local sponsors have been secured for at least six giant, helium-filled balloons to appear in this year's parade. The balloons range up to 72 feet tall and require up to 38 volunteer "balloon handlers" who hang on to ropes and control the balloons as they march along.
"It's a big project, but we think it will be a tremendous attraction to the parade for young and old," said Barb Anderson, "plus a great way to celebrate this quarter-century milestone for Storm Lake's biggest celebration."
Balloon characters secured so far and their sponsors: "Sundance the Cowboy," Central Bank; "Distinguished Uncle Sam," Tyson Fresh Foods; "Children of the World," Bil-Mar Foods; "Sparky the Fire Dog," City of Storm Lake/Volunteer Firefighters Association; "Bullwinkle J. Moose," Iowa Office Supply and La-Z-Boy Business Furniture; and "Murphy the Leprechaun," Fitzpatrick Auto Center.
