Tornado named outstanding high school athlete at meet
Shane Maier was named the outstanding high school athlete of the meet as he won both the shot put and discus at the Sioux City Relays on Saturday.
Maier threw the shot put 58 feet, 7 inches and heaved the discus 164-1 1/5.
Storm Lake had numerous impressive performances in the meet. The 4x400 relay tandem of Nick Sorbe, Nick Kurtz, Mike Keller and Mike Miller finished first with a time of 3 minutes, 29.64 seconds.
Tyler Radke placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.5 seconds. The 4x200 relay unit of Miller, Derrick Randall, Colt Cook and Keller placed third with a clocking of 1:34.1.
The 4x800 relay quartet of Tyler Youde, Sorbe, Kevin Wulfekuhler and Dan Christiansen finished fourth with a time of 8:32.65.
The 4x100 relay team of Bandaluck Sayarath, Cook, Manuel Marquez and Randall placed fifth in 48.24 seconds.
Three other performances were impressive, but did not place. Wulfekuhler ran a personal-best time of 4:58.74 in the 1,500 meters, which was 5 seconds off the Storm Lake freshmen record. Brett Miller ran the race in 5:14.12.
Christiansen ran the 800 meters in a time of 2:09.51, which was 3 seconds off the Storm Lake freshmen record.
The 4x200 relay missed qualifying for the Drake Relays by four-tenths of a second.
Storm Lake runs in the Spirit Lake Invitational tonight and will be at the Pocahontas Invitational on Friday night.
