Several area athletes to compete in Drake Relays

Several area athletes have qualified for the prestigious Drake Relays this weekend in Des Moines.

Storm Lake's boys track and field team has qualified in five events. Shane Maier will compete in both the shot put and discus, while Mike Keller will participate in the long jump.

Two relay events will run for the Tornadoes - the 4x100 and the 4x400.

The 4x200 relay missed qualifying for the Drake Relays by .4 of a second.

The Storm Lake girls track team will be represented by two events at the 94th annual classic.

Amy Wulfekuhler will be appearing in her fourth Drake Relays when she competes in the long jump on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The 4x100 relay team of Stacy Schmidt, Paige Havens, Molly Daniels and Wulfekuhler will run on Saturday at 8:45 a.m.

Laurens-Marathon qualified in the boys 4x100 relay event.

Newell-Fonda's Eric Johnson qualified for Drake in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches.

Laurens-Marathon will send two girls to Drake. Betsy Behrens qualified in the 100 meter hurdles, while Jenni Elbert qualified in the high jump.
