BV 4-Hers boost Iowa products in Pride contest

Monday, April 14, 2003

On Sunday, April 6th, sixteen local 4-H'ers participated in the "Pride of Iowa" event held at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake. According to Melissa Fahr, Buena Vista County Youth Coordinator, "Pride of Iowa is a fun way 4-H'ers may choose to showcase their cooking abilities using products that are produced in Iowa." Iowa products used in this contest included beef, pork, eggs, dairy, oatmeal, soybeans, corn, chicken, and strawberries. A variety of dishes were prepared using these Iowa products.

All participants chose their own recipe and provided their own ingredients and equipment including any small appliances they intended to use in the food preparation. Each participant also made a poster which included their recipe highlighting the Iowa products used. Following the judge's evaluation and conference with the 4-H'er, any additional food prepared was available for sampling by those in attendance. Pride of Iowa Superintendent, Deb Overgaard emceed the event.
