Alta to hold 3 on 3 boys basketball tournament

A 3 on 3 basketball tournament will be held on Saturday, May 3, at Alta High School.

The tournament is for boys in grades 3-8. There is an entry fee and pre-registration is not required. Each grade level will have its own tournament if at least four teams are entered. If less than four, then grades will be combined.

Registration for grades 3-6 will be done at 8:30 a.m. with games beginning at 9 a.m. Grades 7-8 will register at 10 a.m. with games beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Wordekemper to make start for Creighton

Former Storm Lake St. Mary's baseball standout Eric Wordekemper is scheduled to get the starting nod for Creighton University when the Bluejays face Notre Dame in an early-season clash this Sunday.

The 2002 St. Mary's graduate has been listed as the No. 2 starter on the Creighton pitching staff out of a total of 15 pitchers on the team.

A group of St. Mary's students and parents will be making the trip to see the noon game, and Wordekemper is scheduled to speak to the group shortly after the game.

Iowa Games deadlines set

Deadlines for entering the 2003 Iowa Games have been set.

June 4: team basketball. June 11: youth soccer. June 18: figure skating, volkswalk. June 25: baseball, basketball, flag football, softball, volleyball, ultimate, shooting, swimming, track and field. July 2: 3D archery, archery, basketball, billiards, canoe/kayak, cross country race, cycling, disc golf, electronic darts, equestrian, fencing, flag football, golf, horseshoes, judo, mountain biking, racquetball, road race, soccer, softball, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, triathlon, volksride, volkswalk, sand volleyball, water skiing, weightlifting. July 23: diving. August 6: Iowa Games Golf Classic. On-site: 3D archery, billiards, canoe/kayak, cross country race, disc golf, electronic darts, judo, mountain biking, road race, tae kwon do, tennis and triathlon.

BV athlete earns IIAC honor

The Iowa Conference announced the Players of the Week for the conference's six sports in competition during the week.

Buena Vista freshman Chad Hinrichs earned the award in men's track and field. He turned in three top-two finishes at the University of Sioux Falls Invitational.

Hinrichs won the 400 meters in a time of 50.33 seconds and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team in 3 minutes, 22.62 seconds. Hinrichs also ran on the second place 4x100 relay team that finished in a time of 42.96 seconds.
