Robert Forbes

Funeral services for Robert S. Forbes, 83, of Aurelia, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the First Congregational Church in Aurelia, with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia. Bob died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.

Robert Stephenson Forbes was born January 27, 1920, the son of Ben and Bessie (White) Forbes in Keosauqua. He graduated from the Keosauqua High School. On June 15, 1941, Bob married Helen Margaret Burns. Bob served in the Army Air Corp during W.W.II, He worked as a printer and Linotype operator for the Daily lowan in Iowa City, in Alexandria, MN, for the Fort Dodge Messenger, and the Rockwell City Advocate, On September 23, 1950, Bob and Helen purchased the Aurelia Sentinel. Bob came to Aurelia to publish the paper, and Helen remained in Rockwell City with the boys for a year before moving to Aurelia when housing became available. He ran the Sentinel until 1982, and has continued to operate Forbes and Sons Printing. He was a charter member of the Aurelia Kiwanis. Bob enjoyed playing cards, the Iowa Hawkeyes, hunting, fishing, his grandchildren, reading, and discussing politics.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents, his wife Helen on November 7, 1996; four brothers, Don, Dick, Raymond, and Joe Forbes, and two sisters, Ruth Kinney and Esther Proctor.

Survivors include his five sons, three daughters-in-law, and nine grandchildren: Robert J. and Michael D. of Aurelia, Thomas Benjamin and Diane of Carroll and their family: Benjie, Tim, Greg, and Alyson, William B. and Bonnie of Correctionville and their family: Andrew and wife Carrie, Graham and Zane, and Daniel Patrick and Beth of Boise, Idaho and their family: Brandon and Katie. Other survivors include two sisters-in-law, Ann Forbes of Baraboo, Wl, and Genievieve Forbes of Boulder, CO, and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
