Casino decision is critical, say lawmakers

Tuesday, April 8, 2003

Resolving the gambling feud in the state will be the key to continued environmental funding, according to this area's state legislators.

Speaking at a legislative forum on Saturday at Abner Bell's, State Representative Mary Lou Freeman and State Senator Steve Kettering said a lot hinges on the outcome of an appeal filed by the State of Iowa against the state's three land-based casinos.

Freeman said $1 million in lake restoration funds has been allocated in the 2003-04 budget, though nothing in the state's budget is guaranteed at this point.

"A lot would change if we would lose the lawsuit," she said, though she said lawmakers have "no intent" of removing that funding.

Kettering said lawmakers are optimistic that the State of Iowa will win its appeal.
