St. Mary's boys debut with strong showing

What a way to open the track and field season for Storm Lake St. Mary's.

The Panthers won two relay events - their first first-place finish in a relay in quite some time - to highlight their season debut on Monday night at the Jefferson-Scranton Earlybird Invitational.

No team points were kept, but the Panthers would have scored enough points to win the team title in Class B.

Sam Becker won the 400 meters with a time of 57.3 seconds. Kolin Brighton, Jeff Foell, Ryan Gessner and Matthew Smith teamed up to win both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The 4x100 was clocked in 47.2 seconds and the 4x200 in 1 minute, 39.11 seconds.

Brighton placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.3 seconds. Foell was third in 25.1. Smith leaped 18 feet, 2 inches to finish third in the long jump.

Nate Gessner placed fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.1, while Ryan Gessner was fifth in the 100 meters in a clocking of 12.43 seconds. Foell finished fifth in the long jump in 17-3.

St. Mary's will compete in the Glidden-Ralston Relays on April 11 at Carroll Stadium.

Southern Cal Invitational

Schaller-Crestland finished first in three relays at the Southern Calhoun Earlybird Invitational on Monday night at Lake City.

The Wildcats' tandem of Brady Struchen, Nathan Johnson, Alan Griep and A.J. Dahm won the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:38. The mile medley unit of Jeremy Robley, Struchen, Dahm and Jeff Witzke placed first with a time of 3:49.2. The 4x400 quartet of Witzke, Tim Langner, Griep and Dahm finished first with a clocking of 3:40.4.

Dahm placed second in the high jump in 6-1. Langner was second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.56 seconds, second in the 400 meter hurdles in 59.64 seconds, and third in the long jump with a leap of 18-6 3/4. Robley placed third in the 110 high hurdles in 16.59 seconds. Niklas Keoning was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.4, third in the 1,600 meters in 5:00.6 and fourth in the 3,200 meters in 10:52.8. Witzke was fifth in the 3,200 in 11:00.7.

Shawn Griep was fifth in the 400 meters in 56.16 seconds. Robley was sixth in the 200 meters in 25.19 seconds.

l Sioux Central received first-place finishes from Cody Wittmaack in the long jump with a leap of 20-1 1/2 and Matt McKibben in the 110 high hurdles in 15.88 seconds.

Richie Thacker finished second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:03.9. Jason Ferguson placed third in the 400 meters in 55.29 seconds.

Wittmaack took fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 17.07 seconds and fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.6. Adam Huebner placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 42-7 1/2.

Andrew Phinney placed third in the 200 meters in 24.95 seconds and was fourth in the 100 meters with a clocking of 12.13 seconds.

Josh Halverson took fourth in the high jump in 5-8, while McKibben was fifth in 5-6. Jake Reiling placed fourth in the 800 meters in 2:16.1, while David Tellefsen was sixth in 2:18.3.

Ryan Ruhs was sixth in the discus in 110-9. Thacker was sixth in the 1,600 meters in 5:04.9.

Sioux Central's 4x800 relay team placed fourth in a time of 9:21.7. The 4x200 was third in 1:39.2, while the 4x400 placed third with a time of 3:47.5.

The mile medley relay took fifth in 4:08.7. The 4x100 relay was sixth with a clocking of 57.1 seconds.
