Storm Lake area has all the resources

Buena Vista County hopes to stir up a gust of support to take part in a proposed wind farm development estimated to cost over $300 million.

This week, MidAmerican Energy Holding Company announced its plan to construct the world's largest wind energy project in the state of Iowa. Currently, the world's largest wind facility is located in Washington and Oregon and produces 300 megawatts of electricity. The project will place Iowa third in the nation for wind energy production behind California and Texas.

The $323 million project will consist of 180 to 200 wind turbines, each generating approximately 1.5 to 1.65 megawatts of power. The first units are expected to come on-line by the end of 2004, with the entire project completed by the end of 2006.

MidAmerican Energy expects the project to produce 310 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 85,000 homes.

No specific location was unveiled during a press conference Tuesday at the Iowa State Capitol, but possible locations are nearby.
