For more than 60 years, the Cobblestone Ballroom in Lakeside secured a place in the history of northwest Iowa by being the legendary home to performers ranging from Louis Armstrong to The Velaires.
The notable facility will secure its place in history this August, when the Cobblestone will be inducted into the Iowa RockNRoll Hall of Fame during a ceremony Aug. 31 at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park.
The ceremony will mark a triumphant moment for the venerable ballroom, which closed its doors in 1986 and remains vacant and up for sale.
The site was once considered one of the premier entertainment venues in the entire Midwest, and Doris Welle, the executive director of the Iowa RockNRoll Music Association, said the Lakeside facility was selected for induction because of its illustrious reputation for attracting top-name performers to the Storm Lake area.
"The Cobblestone was chosen because it has a real rich history," Welle said. "The list of performers that played there is just incredible, and it brought national rock and roll music to that corner of Iowa."
