Funeral Arrangements

Arlo Anderson

Arlo D. Anderson, 89, of Storm Lake, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake. A funeral service was on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Military rites were provided by AMVETS Post #66 of Storm Lake. Interment was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Sliefert~Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Arlo Dale Anderson was born the son of Theodore and Josephine (Wilcox) Anderson on July 27, 1913, in the rural family home near Storm Lake. He grew up on the family farm, attended grade school at Grant No. 9 in rural Storm Lake and spent his high school years at Central High School in Storm Lake. Following high school, Arlo went to Valpariso, Ind., for six months to complete radio school training.

While growing up, Arlo attended Storm Lake Methodist Church. When he moved to Troy, Ohio, he attended the Baptist Church. Upon his return to Storm Lake in 1995, Arlo joined the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake where he was baptized on October 19, 1995.

Before Arlo moved away to pursue a career in the radio business, he worked at Flores Appliance in Storm Lake. He then opened a radio shop in Marysville, Ohio. He accepted defense work and worked also as a radio tester at Lear Aviation before joining the armed services. On Sept. 21, 1942, Arlo joined the United States Army. He served in WWII with the 141st Army Airways Communication System in Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a radio repairman and earned the ranking of Sergeant. Arlo served his country until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 22, 1946. Upon his discharge, he operated a radio repair shop in Piqua, Ohio, until 1951. He spent the next seven years working for the Department of Air Defense in Dayton, Ohio. In 1959, Arlo worked in Troy, Ohio, at Allied Technology, Inc. where he was on the final inspection team that tested auto-pilots before they were installed on aircraft. He remained with ATI until his retirement in 1980.

Arlo enjoyed radios, woodworking, photography, marksmanship and Lionel trains.

Arlo is survived by three brothers, Ivan Anderson of Storm Lake, Donald Anderson and his wife, Peggy of Hoffman, Ill., and Richard Anderson and his wife, Ruth of Storm Lake; and one sister, Harriet Copps of Sioux City.

Preceding Arlo in death were his parents; two brothers, Robert Anderson and Clarence Anderson; one sister, Dorothy Liniger; and special friend, Ressie Jackson.

Marie Stern

Marie K. Stern, 87, of Storm Lake, passed away at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City on March 12, 2003, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Pastor Steven Schulz officiated. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Marie Kathryn Weitzel was born on Dec. 6, 1915, in Sac County to Henry and Ruth (Andrews) Weitzel. She attended school in Early, Juniata and Hayes Consolidated School of Storm Lake. She quit school following 10th grade to help support her family by hiring out as a housekeeper.

On Oct. 5, 1937, she was united in marriage to Alvin J. Stern at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waverly. This union was blessed with two children, Robert and Bonnie. They farmed in Butler County, and the Truesdale, Hanover, Aurelia and Alta areas before settling west of Storm Lake in 1950. Marie worked seasonally at the canning factory and Dekalb Seed Corn. She retired from Vern's Variety in 1977 after working there for over 15 years.

In the early years, she raised and sold rabbits, parakeets and chinchillas. Her favorite pastimes were gardening and fishing. For many years, she enjoyed making and selling craft items. Her lastest passion was bingo. She divided her time between Mesa, Ariz., and Storm Lake for the last 10 years.

Marie is survived by her son Robert and wife Bonnie Stern of Storm Lake; daughter Bonnie and husband Thomas Augard of Cherokee; four grandsons; five great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Jarvis of Sac City, Doris and husband Loran McBride of Early, and Elaine and husband Chuck Goodman of Alta; sister-in-law Dorothy Weitzel of Storm Lake; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Marie in death are her parents, Henry and Ruth Weitzel; husband, Alvin; grandson, Michael Stern; brother, Melvin Weitzel; sister, Margaret Miller; and a special friend, Ken Foell.
