School Administrators of Iowa has announced that Dave Kwikkel, the PK-8 principal at Schaller-Crestland, was a finalist for the 2003 Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year Award.
Kwikkel was nominated by his peers and selected as a finalist for the award by a committee of Iowa elementary principals. Don Ortman of Rock Valley Community Schools was named 2003 Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year.
All nominees and recipients will be recognized at SAI's awards banquet on Aug. 5 in Des Moines.
Kwikkel has been an elementary principal in Schaller-Crestland since 1995. Before coming to S-C, he taught industrial arts and coached football and basketball at Newell-Providence schools from 1981-1986. In 1987 Kwikkel served as a 7-12 principal for Crestland CSD until the spring of 1989. In the fall of 1989 he began serving as a middle school principal (grades 5-8) from the Schaller-Crestland whole grade sharing program, a position he filled for the next six years.
In 1994 the Schaller-Crestland Middle School was recognized as an Iowa FINE school for outstanding achievement in middle school programming. Kwikkel has served in his current PK-8 capacity since 1995.
"I am proud of Schaller-Crestland's aggressive staff development program," Kwikkel said. 'We have been focusing on training all faculty about teacher effectiveness in the classroom, individual and group mentoring with classroom support for better K-12 articulation, and the use of data to define and impact student achievement goals. I feel our school is a real leader in the amount of in-service opportunities we provide to our staff and support personnel."
SAI, a statewide organization founded in 1987, represents more than 2,000 Iowa educational administrators. SAI's mission is to enhance PreK-12 education through effective leadership by school administrators.
