Mustangs get past Odebolt-Arthur in battle of Top 5 teams
Eric Johnson played like a man on a mission.
The 6-foot-7 center scored 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked five shots to help No. 1 and unbeaten Newell-Fonda beat No. 4 Odebolt-Arthur 64-52 in a Class 1A district final at Lake View on Thursday night.
Newell-Fonda, now 24-0, will play Hinton (20-4) in a substate game today at 7 p.m. in Cherokee. The winner advances to the state tournament next week in Des Moines.
"I was very pleased with our defensive effort," Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos said. "To hold a top team like Odebolt-Arthur to 52 points is playing defense. We were able to knock down some key free throws to seal the win."
"I was very impressed by the sportsmanship of the Odebolt-Arthur players and fans," Loos added. "They were very supportive of their team and polite to our players."
Newell-Fonda jumped out to a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, but the Trojans tied the game at 35-35 at the halftime break. The Mustangs surged back ahead 46-41 entering the fourth period.
Matt Stauter finished with 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals for Newell-Fonda.
