Two teams still in search of a dream

Thursday, February 27, 2003

Newell-Fonda, Galva-Holstein now one game from state tourney

Jennifer Schumann scored 19 points, and Newell-Fonda scored 11 unanswered points to pull away early in the fourth quarter and beat Treynor in a Class 1A regional semifinal on Tuesday night at Carroll.

Newell-Fonda, now 22-2 and ranked 14th, will play 18th-ranked Farragut (21-2) in a regional final game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Harlan.

The game was tied at 13-13 after the first quarter. The Mustangs held a 26-23 halftime lead and led 44-41 entering the fourth period of play.

Newell-Fonda led 47-46 with just over 6 minutes to play when it scored 11 unanswered points to go ahead 58-46. Treynor never recovered from that spurt.

Ashley Loos and Kristen Culp added nine points apiece for the Mustangs, while Ashley Bellinghausen and Jenny Scharn each had eight.

"We are really playing as a team," Newell-Fonda coach Dick Jungers said. "Every night we have different players step up and hit big shots. The girls are doing a great job of working the ball around to the hot hand. Defensively, we are really getting after the other team."

"Treynor was a very disciplined and fundamentally sound ballclub," Jungers added. "Gail Hartigan is one of the best coaches in the state. Beating a team like Treynor is always an accomplishment."
