New used merchandise store opens doors

Thursday, February 27, 2003

A new used merchandise store has recently opened its doors in the Storm Lake area, and the two owners of the establishment are hopeful local residents will be able to find the furniture, wall items or clothes they need at their business.

Ruperto and Pam Castaneda opened Anthony's New and Used in town two weeks ago at 223 East Railroad, and have assembled a number of items for sale throughout three rooms of the store.

The multitude of used chairs, televisions, lamps, shoes, typewriters and other products in the store is the result of more than a year of visiting different auctions and receiving different things from relatives and friends, a process Pam said has both been enjoyable and exhausting.

"It's definitely taken a while to get all of this, but we think it's worth it," Pam said. "We have been happy with how things have turned out. Business has been pretty good."

"Things were pretty easy to find," Ruperto said. "We are happy to be able to have such a wide variety."

A native of Rockwell City, Pam moved to Storm Lake in 1992 with her husband, a native of Durango, Mexico. After working at different jobs around the area they opened a flower store at 103 East Railroad in 2000, but decided to shift focus last year after not experiencing the level of business they had hoped for with the flower shop.

They then began collecting their items, and began looking for a place for their store to be located late last year. Pam said their goal was to stay in the downtown area, and said they were happy with the situation at 223 East Railroad.

The main room of the building contains a treasure trove of different used items, as beds, clocks, appliances such as vacuums and blenders, several brands of televisions and other items are stocked wall to wall.

A second room is full of a large selection of shoes, including children and adult styles. The second room also houses wall items such as small decorative guitars and paintings, coats and other apparel such as belts.

A smaller third room contains a number of large furniture items, mostly chairs and sofas.

The hours for the store will be 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 12-6 p.m. on Monday and 12-4 p.m. on Sunday.
