William Hartgenbush

W. A. (Bill) Hartgenbush, age 86, of Schaller, passed away February 11, from a lengthy illness.

Services were held Sunday, February 16, at the United Methodist Church in Schaller. Burial was in the Schaller Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Schaller V.F.W. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller was in charge of the arrangements.

Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois, June 3, 1916. He moved with his parents Henry and Zora (Winslow) Hartgenbush to Ida Grove, as a young man. He graduated from the Ida Grove High School with the class of 1934, where he was an outstanding athlete.

He married Nina Bennett on May 3, 1938. To this union, one daughter, Kathleen, was born. They lived in Sioux City until 1941 when Bill entered the service.

Bill served four years with the Army Air Force. He received the purple heart and other medals, and was discharged from the O'Reilly General Hospital at Springfield, Missouri on November 19, 1945.

He then went to work for the United States Post Office, as a clerk, Assistant Postmaster, and Postmaster for the last fourteen years. In 1977, Bill retired after 35 total years of service.

Bill belonged to the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He held many offices in the above organizations.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen and husband Ron Rathman of Sioux City; one brother, Henry and wife Mille Hartgenbush of New Mexico; two grandsons: Robert and William and wife Julie and their five children Keith, Anna, Craig, Mary, and Adam all of Sgt. Bluff.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Nina; his parents; three sisters: Viola, Zora Mae, and Mae, and one brother Edward.

Judith Nellis

Funeral Services for Judith E. Nellis, Shell Rock, formerly of Gillette Grove will be held, Tuesday, February 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Early, with Reverend William Niles and Reverend Irene Niles officiating. Burial will be in Early Union Cemetery in Early. Farber and Otteman Funeral Homes, Sac City, are in charge of arrangements.

Judith E. Nellis, age 82, of Early, passed away on February 15, at Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

Judith was born June 21, 1920, in rural Gillette Grove, the daughter of Hardy and Martha Ann (Miller) Ball. She graduated from Gillette Grove High School in 1937 and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from BV College in 1972. Judy was united in marriage to Ray Nellis on June 30, 1942, in Gillette Grove. Prior to her marriage she taught school in Correctionville and Langdon. She taught a total of 44 years, the last 20 at Crestland.

Judy was very active in her community and church. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Early and taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the Early Women's Club, 50 year member of the Bridgette's and a Past Worthy matron of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, golf, and playing bridge.

Judy is survived by her three children: Robert and his wife Kay Nellis of Waverly, Beth Goodvin of West Branch, and Cindy and her husband Larry Gilmer of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren: Jon and his wife Lisa Nellis, and RaeJean Cole and her husband Jeff; four great grandchildren: Elise Goodvin, Kate Goodvin, Raymond Nellis and Matthew Nellis; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: husband Ray on November 19, 2000; two sisters: Stella Walker and Annie Freberg; and two brothers: Sherman Ball and William Ball.
