Tuesday, February 18, 2003

Shayna Mugge scored 16 points, and Anne Morgan added 15 and Molly Kruse 13 to help give Spencer 58-39 victory over Storm Lake in a Lakes Conference game played on Saturday night in Spencer.

Storm Lake fell behind 14-9 at the end of the first period and trailed 23-18 at halftime. It was 38-33 Spencer entering the fourth quarter. The Tigers outscored the Tornadoes 20-6 in the fourth period of play.

Molly Daniels scored 11 points to lead Storm Lake. Lindsey Frederiksen had nine points and Billie Blanchard added eight.

Casey Jennett led the Tornadoes in rebounding with nine. Mel Fisher cleared five. Fisher handed out eight assists and Daniels three. Daniels also charted three steals.

Storm Lake, now 5-10 in the league and 7-13 overall, made 16 of 41 field goals in the game for 39 percent. Spencer was 17 of 53 from the field for 32 percent.

The telling tale in the game was free throw shooting. Spencer made 21 of 28, while Storm Lake was just 3 of 8.

"You could tell we had a couple of days off," Storm Lake coach Stacey VanDerSloot said. "Our defense was slow. We committed too many fouls to send them to the free-throw line."

Storm Lake entertains Sioux City Heelan in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal tournament game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
