Comments by Congressman King on the Columbia tragedy

Tuesday, February 4, 2003

Iowans join their prayers, with the prayers of all Americans, for the families of the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

"They reached for the sky in their lives and careers demonstrating excellence in all they did. This accident has taken the lives of seven brave space travelers and is a blow to our space program," said Congressman Steve King.

Congressman King reminds us to fully appreciate the contributions of these patriots.

"As we mourn this heartrending loss, bear in mind the tremendous accomplishments of the seven shuttle astronauts, as well as all who have stretched the bounds of human achievement. The triumphs of the space program are monumental in world history. These men and women set a standard for both duty and discovery.

"What went wrong is the question we must answer. We should answer it quickly but carefully, then renew our commitment to space exploration," said Congressman King. "The Columbia astronauts were the vanguard for the next generation of space travel and of humanity. What defines the American spirit is the diligent will to persevere despite daunting challenges."
