Tornado art students were recently recognized for their artistic excellence with a whirlwind of regional awards, as the artworks of a school-record 43 pupils were accepted for display at the Scholastic Art Awards show at the Morningside Eppley Art Gallery in Sioux City.
Students from Storm Lake Middle School and Storm Lake High School entered their pieces in the Scholastic Art Awards show in January, and competed against students from 24 other public and private schools throughout northwest Iowa for honors ranging from acceptance into the show to the prestigious Gold Portfolios award.
Local artists prepared and submitted senior portfolios (eight works each) and individual works in various categories, including painting, drawing and sculpture. A total of 220 works were accepted into the show, with 93 of those coming from Storm Lake students, 42 percent of the total.
A number of students earned noteworthy awards, including the trio of Megan Kruse, Amy Wulfekuhler and Erin Taphorn, who were the only three students from the entire northwest Iowa region to receive the prestigious Gold Portfolios Award in the senior portfolio division. Each will now send their work to the National Scholastic Art Awards competition in New York City.
