A large fire caused extensive damage to the residence of Shannon Gaes and Dawn (Hommandberg) Gaes at 126 West Highway in Alta on Monday morning. Alta fire fighters were called to the house shortly after 10 a.m. after receiving a report of flames in the basement. The fire spread throughout the house, eventually emerging from the roof of the structure, resulting in a total loss of the home and contents. The Alta Fire Department was on call for 5.5 hours, and received help from Storm Lake, Sioux Rapids and Buena Vista County. The State Fire Marshal had not determined a cause for the blaze as of press time Monday night. No members of the Gaes family were inside at the time the fire broke out.
