The first baby born in Storm Lake in 2003 came into the world to the sound of a helpful volunteer voice.
Luis Gustavo Lagunes, the baby of Jose and Irene Lagunes of Sioux Rapids, was born at 9:29 a.m. on Saturday at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. The first child of the couple, Luis weighed 7 pounds, 1.5 ounces.
Storm Lake resident Claudia Hernandez came to the aid of the couple, who are not fluent in English. Hernandez served as an interpreter, relaying messages between doctors and the expectant mother.
Hernandez, who had never met Irene before the birthing experience, stayed 26 straight hours at the hospital to be by the side of the mother and infant.
"I was hoping to get some sleep during that time, but I was needed," Hernandez said. "I had to tell her what the doctor was telling her."
Hernandez said being part of the process was satisfying for her.
"It was a good experience," Hernandez said. "To be there for the birth of the child was amazing."
