A 20-year-old native of Storm Lake bowled the first-ever sanctioned 800 series in Storm Lake on Wednesday night at Storm Lake Bowl, firing scores of 280, 300 and 247 for a series score of 847.
Greg Spooner, the son of Dennis and Ruth Spooner of Storm Lake, has been bowling for 15 years, and accomplished the unprecedented local feat during play in a Wednesday night men's league, making the moment even more special.
"It was wild," Spooner said. "Since it happened during men's league a lot of people were there and knew what was going on, so it was really something when I got it."
Spooner said being able to notch his second career 300 game - a game in which all pins are knocked down for strikes - helped inspire him to try to achieve the 800 series.
"The 300 game really boosted my confidence," Spooner said. "I had a 580 then so I knew the 800 series was in reach and I had a nice shot to get it."
