Police seize meth, equipment, gun at Alta home
Storm Lake Police have arrested a Storm Lake man and an Alta man after discovering a mobile methamphetamine lab in the trunk of a car in downtown Storm Lake Thursday afternoon.
The investigation caused a block of the busy business district as well as Lake Avenue traffic to be cordoned off for two hours.
Police received a tip shortly after 1 p.m. that a customer might be purchasing precursors to make the meth drug at Medicap Pharmacy. Police stopped a suspect vehicle in the parking lot and located the mobile laboratory.
The occupants of the vehicle were in possession of a substance believed to be methamphetamine and precursors to manufacture methamphetamine. Police took the subjects into custody for questioning and then located components for a meth lab in the trunk of the vehicle.
Police set up a safety perimeter around the vehicle and personnel from the fire department, county sheriff's department, Iowa State Patrol and BV County Paramedics all responded. One square block was closed off around the vehicle located at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Railroad Street.
A Pocahontas County Sheriff's Lab Response Team responded and removed the multiple lab components seized from the vehicle.
Public Safety Personnel cleared the scene at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Late Thursday afternoon, after additional investigation, police charged two occupants of the vehicle.
Police charged Chad Larsen, age 31 of Alta, with Possession of a Controlled Substance With Intent to Deliver, Possession of a Precursor With Intent to Manufacture Methamphetamine (both felonies) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Larsen was transported to the BV Regional Medical Center where he was treated for burns to the legs believed to have occurred from exposure to chemicals used in the cooking of methamphetamine. Larsen was treated and released and transferred to the BV County Jail where he was booked in on $23,075 cash bond.
Police charged Jason Zevenbergen, age 27 of Storm Lake with Possession of Precursors With Intent to Manufacture Methamphetamine (a felony). He was booked into the County Jail on $9,750.
Based on information collected Storm Lake Police worked with Alta Police and secured two search warrants for residences in Alta in connection with drug investigation.
At 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening, officers from Alta and Storm Lake, the BV County Sheriff's Department, Iowa State Patrol, Alta Fire Department and Lab Response Personnel from the O'Brien and Pocahontas Sheriff's Departments executed a search warrant at 118 Division Street and 205 Prospect Street in Alta.
