What a debut for Casey Morgan.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots in his varsity debut to help Storm Lake open the season with a 62-41 victory over Pocahontas on Saturday night at Tornado Fieldhouse.
Storm Lake led 13-11 after the first quarter, 25-19 at halftime and 43-33 after three periods.
A.J. Spielman scored 13 points for the Tornadoes, while Tyler Youde added 10 points and seven rebounds. Nick Sorbe charted six assists.
Storm Lake committed 24 turnovers in the game.
"We started out very slow, which I knew we would being that it was our first game," Storm Lake coach Tim Keigan said. "I wasn't disappointed about the missed shots but more so with the turnovers and not executing our offense in the first half. Finally, we settled down and made some nice passes to get some easy looks."
"Nick Sorbe did a nice job distributing the ball," Keigan added. "We had some kids come off the bench and really give us a spark. I think they really changed the intensity of the game, and probably without them we might not have come away with a win. I think Tyler Youde played a great game. He has been out with a bum ankle. He stepped in and really gave us a lift defensively and on the boards. Casey Morgan played well. He came in in his first game and really set the tone down low. He positioned himself well to get some easy looks and did a nice job on the boards. It is nice to get a win, but we have a lot of work to do."
