Gunnar Johnson

Gunnar E. Johnson, age 88, of Albert City, formerly of Storm Lake, died Monday November 18, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City. Funeral services were held on Friday, November 22, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of arrangements.

Gunnar Emory Johnson was born on August 18, 1914 in Marcus, to Oscar and Esther (Carlson) Johnson, along with his twin brother Harold. He attended Grand Meadow School through the 8th grade. He then farmed near Mount Pleasant.

Gunnar married Norma Peterson on July 30, 1961. He was a farm laborer for many years and lived northeast of Storm Lake. In 1973 he began working as a custodian at Buena Vista University and retired in 1979. After retirement, until age 81, he worked at Wal-Mart, the gasohol plant, and was a farm laborer.

Gunnar enjoyed gardening and had a fondness for gladiolas, mums, and hibiscus. He also enjoyed the outdoors and fishing. He liked collecting pig memorabilia.

Gunnar is survived by his wife Norma; a daughter Coretta Stone and special friend Ron Boxwell of Waterloo; three sons Cory and fiancé Amy Baumgartner of Lima, Ohio, Ronald and wife Kathy Johnson of California, and Danny and wife Kathy Johnson of Worthington, MN; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister Bernell Aronson and husband Robert of Albert City; one brother Carl Johnson of Park Rapids, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Leonard, Henry, Gunnar, and twin brother Harold; two sisters, Olga Larson and another sister in Sweden; and several cousins.
