An appeal for George Pittman, Jr. is still in the early stages of the process, according to his appellate defender.
Stephen Japuntich, of the state defender's office, said the case has been docketed. He will review case information and submit a brief to the court within the next three months.
"I've not yet addressed his case, I've just assembled the record," he said.
It is too soon to tell whether the case will go directly to the Iowa Supreme Court or the Court of Appeals, he said.
Pittman, 34, was convicted of first-degree murder last summer for the stabbing death of his wife, Keo Pittman, which took place in September 2001.
An appeal is automatic in Iowa for murder convictions.
