'My Mom is my hero'
Ruth Izer, of Clarion, was honored as "Parent of the Year" by Buena Vista University during BVU's Family weekend.
BVU students submit nominations for the "Parent or Parents of the Year" award by writing an essay to a panel of BVU administrators for review.
Izer was nominated for the award by her daughter, Ellen, who is a senior mass communication major at BVU.
"My mother is my hero," wrote Ellen in her nomination essay. "Quite often, people say that their favorite sports icon or movie star is their hero, but my mom is mine."
"Throughout my life she has been the strongest, kindest, yet also the most open, most intelligent and most courageous person I have known, working to instill these principles in my sister and me," she wrote. "I know that wherever I go, I have the courage to face whatever will come because of the lessons she had taught us. I was privileged to have the best as my teacher." The award, which annually recognizes parents for their support of their son or daughter's college education, was announced at halftime of the BVU football game on Saturday, Nov. 2.
