Funeral services for Hulda L. Buenger, 99, of Aurelia, will be 4 p.m. Thursday, October 24, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Crawford County.
Hulda died Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Hulda Louisa Wilhelmia Ohm was born on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 2, 1902, at the farm home of her parents near Charter Oak. She was the first of two daughters born to Otto W. and Martha (Gierman) Ohm. She was baptized January 11, 1903, at her family home by Reverend Chris Wehking of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Charter Oak. She was confirmed April 13, 1919.
Hulda graduated from the Mapleton High School in May of 1921. While in high school she played basketball and went with her team to the State Tournaments. After graduating she taught country school in the Smithland area. Hulda and Martin F. Buenger were united in holy matrimony in a double ring ceremony on Sunday, June 10, 1923 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Mapleton. This union was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters. They farmed in Crawford and Monroe Counties, and then in 1946 moved to a farm near Alta where they farmed until moving to Aurelia in 1975.
During her busy lifetime as a farmwife and mother, she taught Sunday School, including high school Bible class for 25 years. She also held various offices in Ladies Aid, sang in the church choir for many years, and was appointed to serve on the first literature board of the Iowa District West Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Hulda was a charter member of the Aurelia P.T.A. and served as secretary of the Aurelia Band Booster Organization.
Survivors who mourn her passing include her daughter, Elizabeth Klumpp Tuttle and her husband John Tuttle of Cherokee; two daughters-in-law, Carolyn Buenger of Florence, WI, and Erika Buenger of Berlin, Germany; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceding Hulda in death were her parents; her husband Martin on March 17, 1985; her sister Helena Bruhn and her husband Leo Bruhn; an infant daughter Margaret; two sons. The Reverend Paul Buenger and James Buenger; one son-in-law, Donald Klumpp; and several nieces and nephews.
