Beavers score 21 unanswered points
Eric Wiebers threw two touchdown passes to Josh Espinosa, and Barry Van Voorst rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns as Buena Vista pulled away in the second half to rout Upper Iowa 38-13 on Saturday at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
Buena Vista led 17-13, but scored 21 unanswered points in the final 2 quarters and 2 minutes.
The Beavers scored first in just over a minute when Espinosa caught a Wiebers touchdown pass from 14 yards out to take an early 7-0 lead.
Some 43 seconds later, the Peacocks evened the score with a 14-yard strike from Aaron Fredette to Troy Gersema to tie the game in the opening 2 minutes of play.
Buena Vista would regain the lead with a 22-yard field goal by Michael Sullivan at the 1:36 mark of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Peacocks took their first lead of the game at 13-10 on an 8-yard pass from Fredette to Wayne Traylor.
The Beavers responded with another touchdown from Wiebers to Espinosa on a 2- yard pass, regaining the lead at 17-13.
Buena Vista would add another touchdown when Wiebers ran 7 yards for a touchdown with 2:12 remaining in the first half.
Van Voorst scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter for a 31-13 lead and added another 1-yard burst in the fourth quarter to make it a 38-13 advantage.
Espinosa caught four passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Beaver receivers. Espinosa is just four catches shy of the school record of 44 catches in a season.
Wiebers, in his first start of the season, finished the day with 164 yards passing and 14 yards rushing. He completed 14 of 24 passes.
Van Voorst led the Beavers rushing game, collecting 121 yards on 27 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
Defensively, Ian Gardner led the Beavers with 11 tackles, including two for loss. Michael Irvin earned eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered it for the Beavers.
Buena Vista, now 2-4 overall, plays at Coe this Saturday.
