Thrashing Maple Valley
Daniel Lichter rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Galva-Holstein, ranked third in Class 1A, held Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto to just 145 yards in total offense in a 35-7 victory last Friday night at Mapleton.
Maple Valley scored the first touchdown of the game, but then it was all Pirates after that. Lichter scored on a 1-yard run and Chad Hustedt on a 7-yard run to make it 15-7.
Evan Platt then scored on TD runs of 2 and 3 yards to put the Pirates on top 29-7. Lichter added a 4-yard run for a 35-7 lead.
Galva-Holstein finished the game with 280 yards rushing on 39 carries. Maple Valley ran for 113 yards. The Pirates passed for 35 yards and the Rams for 32.
Platt rushed for 71 yards on 12 carries. Lichter had 14 carries for his 129 yards.
Brett Friedrichsen led the Pirates on defense with 13 tackles. Elijah Kastner had 11, Hustedt and Tyler Gebers nine apiece, and Dusty Heitmann seven.
Galva-Holstein won despite committing four turnovers.
"We're obviously concerned about turnovers," Pirates coach Brad Knight said. "We dominated the line of scrimmage. Brett and Elijah played well defensively. We overcame our bad start and played well.
Galva-Holstein, now 6-0, takes on district front-runner Southern Calhoun this Friday in Holstein.
