Scare from CR-Bayard
Tyler Nelson threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Brent Kai with 8 seconds remaining to rally and give Aurelia a 20-19 come-from-behind victory over Coon Rapids-Bayard in a battle of unbeaten district teams on Friday night in Coon Rapids.
Aurelia's late score was set up by Tyler Kannegieter's kickoff return to the Coon Rapids-Bayard 37-yard line. Kolin Peterson kicked the decisive extra point.
After the kickoff return, Nelson threw an 8-yard pass to Matt Berg with 21 seconds left to play in the game.
The score came on the heels of a 6-yard TD pass by Coon Rapids-Bayard with 32 seconds remaining. The Crusaders got the ball on their own 35-yard line with 1:12 remaining. The PAT was good for a 19-13 lead.
Aurelia drew first blood when Nelson ran in it from 16 yards out for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Coon Rapids-Bayard answered with a 5-yard TD pass, but the extra point was blocked, making it 7-6 Aurelia.
Kannegieter returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown, and Peterson's PAT gave Aurelia a 13-6 lead.
Coon Rapids-Bayard scored on a 1-yard run and the two-point conversion failed, making it a 13-12 game in favor of Aurelia.
Kai rushed for 67 yards on 18 carries, while Josh Bechtel had 61 yards rushing on 19 carries. Nelson completed 3 of 12 passes for 45 yards.
Aurelia rushed for 160 yards in the game, as did Coon Rapids-Bayard.
Matt Gustafson led Aurelia on defense with 24 tackles. Ryan Radke had 13 and Berg 10.
