Helen Mary Stein was born to Helen Mary (Hainley) and Albert Anthony Leinen on July 10, 1922, at Portsmouth.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and was a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth. On August 12, 1941, she was united in marriage to Carl Peter Stein at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima. To this union fourteen children were born. After their wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Stein farmed in Shelby County for two years and then moved to a farm in Harrison County. They farmed there until January of 1948 when they moved to a farm southeast of Portsmouth. Following Carl's death, Helen continued to live on the farm until 1986 at which time she moved to her present home in Portsmouth.
Helen was an active member of St. Mary's Parish. She was a Charter member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of St. Mary's of Portsmouth, and Rosary Confraternity of St. Mary's. Helen also was actively volunteered as leader of Cass Sunny Sues and the Portsmouth Super Production 4-H Club.
She was selected to attend the National 4-H Certificate of Appreciation for her many years of service to the organization. Additionally, she served as Secretary of Vocally Interested Parents for several years.
Helen loved to bake and was noted for her bread and sour cream chocolate cake. She enjoyed quilting and sewing and played the piano by ear for family sing-a-longs. An avid bowler until 2001, the family hosted a Stein Family Bowling Tournament for over eighteen years, and were noted for being the only family to send tow teams of brothers to the State of Iowa Bowling Tournament.
Helen died on Sunday, October 6, at her residence in Portsmouth having attained the age of eighty years, two months and twenty-six days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl, on April 1, 1976; children, Robert C.Stein and Theresa Stein; grandsons, Mark A. Gross and Chris Stein; granddaughter-in-law, Stephanie Peterson-Stein; granddaughter, Laura A. Gross; sister, Dolores Schmitz; and brother-in-law, Vince Schmitz.
She is survived by her children, Dorothy Gross of Council Bluffs, Alfred Stein and his wife, Jeanne of Lansing, Jim Stein and his wife, Darla of Storm Lake, Albert (Pete) Stein and his wife, Patty of Portsmouth, Pat and her husband , Randy Pash of of Harlan, Carl Stein and his wife, Sandy of Odessa, MO, Bill Stein of Thurman, Don Stein of Portsmouth, Ken Stein and his wife, Julie, of Portsmouth, Larry Stein and his wife Carol of Portsmouth, Paul Stein and his wife, Denise of Griswold, Mary and her husband, John Murtaugh of Wayne, NE; daughter-in-law, Pam Stein of Hemet, CA.
Also surviving are forty-one grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred and her husband, Tony Reinig of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
