Dollars for Scholars drive kicks off

Tuesday, October 8, 2002

The Storm Lake Dollars for Scholars organization begins its annual fund drive next week, with a goal of $12,003.

Area individuals will be contacted by mail and telephone, in an effort to raise funds that will provide scholarships for the graduates of 2003 from both Storm Lake and Storm Lake St. Mary's High Schools.

Every dollar raised stays in the Storm Lake community for the graduates of its two high schools.

Over the past 17 years, Dollars for Scholars has awarded $189,600 to local graduates, providing 507 scholarships for seniors who have gone on to higher education.

Unlike other scholarship programs, Dollars for Scholars reaches out to more than just the top academic students. It takes into account some important intangibles - what a student has contributed to the community, church and civic groups, whether he/she has solid personal goals and how effectively those goals can be communicated, and how hard a student has worked at a job while in school.

Area residents are invited to join the community-wide effort to provide scholarships for the seniors of 2003. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to Dollars for Scholars, 119 West 6th Street, Storm Lake, IA 50588. Any local service groups, business or individual interested in fully funding a scholarship can get details by calling Dean Nicholson or Jacque Anderson, Awards co-chairmen for Dollars for Scholars.
