The public is invited to attend the third Lights On Afterschool event for the Tornado Learning Club and Early Tornado Academy.
Sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance and JC Penney, events will be held at the Storm Lake Middle School, along with open houses at the elementary ETA program, on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Last year, 3,500 afterschool programs nationwide participated in the Lights On Afterschool celebration. This year, more than 5,000 afterschool programs are expected to participate.
The goal of the Afterschool Alliance is to provide afterschool programs for all families in the United States by the year 2010. Actor Arnold Schwartzenegger is the honorary chair.
The Tornado Learning Club (TLC), the middle school before-and-after-school program, and the Elementary Tornado Academy (ETA) for elementary students, will be celebrating Lights On Afterschool on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Everyone is invited to see what students are doing after school in the Storm Lake Community School District.
The TLC and ETA programs keep middle and elementary school students safe, help working families and boost academic achievement. Each day students learn, imagine and discover the heroes within themselves. In addition to homework help, some of the other activities available to students are music, art, science, math, service and technology.
The Storm Lake before- and after-school programs need everyone in the community - parents, business leaders, adult volunteers and elected officials - to spend some time volunteering in these programs.
TLC will be hosting an open house from 4-5:30 p.m. at the middle school. Come and watch students participate in activities such as cooking outdoors (without a grill), work with Buena Vista University students in a writing class, prepare for the play "It's Cool!" and watch students launch hot air balloons. Loreen Wilson, an aide from Senator Tom Harkin's office, will discuss afterschool programs.
ETA is hosting open houses at all four of its elementary sites from 3:10 until 5:30 p.m.
Come see how you can become involved in keeping the Lights On Afterschool!
