Funeral Services for Bernard LeRoy Johnson, 84, of Alta, were held Wednesday, September 25, at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta, with Pastor Craig Lee officiating.
Burial was in the Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta.
Bernard LeRoy Johnson was born on August 24, 1918 in Montgomery, to Joseph and Anna (Peterson) Johnson. The family lived in Linn Grove and later moved to Alta. Bernie was confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta and he graduated from Alta High School in 1937. Bernie started selling cars in 1939. He was active in car sales in Buena Vista and the surrounding areas for 40 years. Bernie was united in marriage to Wilna Mortensen on February 1, 1942, in South Sioux City, NE. The couple lived in Alta their entire married life. He entered the Army on April 28, 1942 and was stationed at Scott Field, Ill, and later at the Sioux Falls Air Base for three years. In June of 1945, he was stationed in the Manilla Phillipine Islands. He was discharged on February 21, 1946. Bernie was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post #6172 of Alta, he served on the Alta Fire Department for ten years, and he served on the Alta Utilities Board for 26 years. He loved his family and friends. Bernard passed away on September 23, in Storm Lake at the age of 84 years and 29 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Will and Caroline (Innes) Mortensen; one brother-in-law, Paul Mortensen; and two sisters-in-law, Eunice Mortensen and Annette Mortensen.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Wilna of Alta; one brother, Harold and Julie Johnson of Owatonna, Minn; two brothers-in-law, Ray Mortensen of Alta and Keith Mortensen of Brookings, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Margaret Mortensen of Alta; and many nieces and nephews.
