'Say it isn't so'

When people ask me where I'm from, I always reply with great pride, "I'm from Iowa." I've always been proud to be from a state I consider to be progressive and a wonderful place to raise children.

It was with great dismay I recently read an editorial in the Arizona Republic that was reprinted from the Boston Globe titled "Pregnancy Police are Loose in Iowa." The editorial told a story of a prosecutor in Storm Lake asking for and receiving patient records from physicians and clinics. These records were for women who had undergone pregnancy tests in the last several months.

Please say it isn't so! I cannot believe any physician or clinic would so ignore the patient privacy laws. Every woman in Storm Lake whose records were turned over, and especially those visited, should immediately file suit against her physician or clinic, and a class action lawsuit against the prosecutor should be considered. If he's elected, recall him! I have not read anything so frightening to the individual's rights in many years!
