Playing great music for people

In many neighborhoods in many cities across the country, "garage bands" are busting out tunes. Not many, however, have been doing it for a combined 123 years.

In Lakeside, four men known as The Expressions have attracted attention at home and around the area for both their talent and longevity.

Mike Berkland, Kevin Christie, Rollie Jensen and Craig Phillips will move their amplifiers, instruments and impressive experience from Berkland's Lakeside garage to the Balloon Days festival this year, as they will headline at the Balloon Days Dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31.

In the 16 years the current foursome has been together, the group has traveled around Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska to play for weddings, community events and even machine shed parties, and lead guitarist Kevin Christie said those in the band thoroughly enjoys their time on stage.
