Funeral services will be held Friday, August 2 at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery.
William Gordon Witt was born on July 3, 1930 at the family home in Storm Lake, the son of Arthur Ronald and Belle Marie (Wilcox) Witt. He was baptized at Lakeside Presbyterian Church and has remained a lifelong member.
Bill graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1948. He participated in sports and enjoyed playing trumpet in the concert and marching bands. Bill's band instructor, Will B. Green, was not only his teacher, but also a life-long friend. Mr. Green's inspiration lead to Bill being an avid fan of jazz, especially big bands such as the Dorsey Brothers and Louis Armstrong. He compiled an impressive collection of autographs of his favorite musicians.
He served with the Iowa National Guard for eight years and received an honorable discharge. On April 8, 1951, Bill married Marlene Larson of Sac City.
Bill's love of sports continued throughout his life and two of his favorite sports heroes were Arnold Palmer and Larry Bird. But, above all was Bill's love for his family; they were his pride and joy. He was the second generation to own and operate the family business, Witt Sales, founded by his father and uncles.
His family includes his wife Marlene, Storm Lake; three daughters: Jennifer Nellans and her husband, Bill, Julie Jepson and Janet Schmidt; one sister Jeanne Witt and three grandchildren: Jack and Hannah Jepson and Lily Nellans all of Des Moines. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
