Thrill of participating in state tournament

Young baseball players from Alta will be able to experience the thrill of participating in a state tournament this weekend, as the Alta area Peewee and Cub B American Legion squads will compete for the state title in Harlan on Saturday and Sunday.

Both teams advanced to state play with wins in district tournaments several weeks ago, and Monte Roberts, the co-coach of the area Peewee team, said he and the kids were ready to have a good time in west-central Iowa.

"We have a good group," Peewee co-coach Monte Roberts said. "We've been pretty successful so far, and we're really looking forward to going down to state and seeing how we can do."

The Peewee team, which is composed of players in grades 5 and under, will play a team from Portsmouth at 2:30 p.m. on Diamond 1 at J.J. Jensen Park in Harlan. The team will then play in either the championship or consolation game of the four-team bracket on Sunday afternoon.

The Cub B team, which is composed of players in grades six and seven, will play the host team, Harlan, at 2:30 p.m. on Diamond 3 at J.J. Jensen Park. The team will also play its consolation or championship game of the four-team bracket on Sunday afternoon.

Many of the players on this year's Cub B team were on the state championship Peewee team last year, and will bring that experience with them to this year's tournament.

Alta's Cub A team, which is made up of players in grades seven and eight, was eliminated in district play this year.

Harlan, which is hosting the American Legion tourney for the first time, is located 80 miles south of Storm Lake and 25 miles south of Denison.
