Eric Wordekemper is determined to make it to the state baseball tournament in his final season.
Wordekemper hit a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie, and tossed a four-hitter on the mound to carry Storm Lake St. Mary's to a 3-1 victory over Alta in a Class 1A district semifinal game played last Friday at Holstein.
With two outs in the seventh, Jeff Speers reached base on a dropped third strike. Wordekemper then hit the ball over the right field fence.
St. Mary's, now 23-8 overall, played Albert City-Truesdale on Monday night at Holstein.
St. Mary's had six hits in the game against losing pitcher Josh Droegmiller. Wordekemper had two hits, as did Tim Brown.
Wordekemper allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out 15 batters.
Dru Leyden had two hits for Alta, which finished 22-10 overall. Heath Glienke singled and scored on a double by Jamie Hammer.
"Alta played a very gutsy game," St. Mary's coach Ryan Berg said. "They played well enough to win. Fortunately, we were able to get some lucky breaks and were able to get the victory. Wordekemper stepped up and got the key hit for us with the game on the line. He pitched a great game to keep us in position where we could have the opportunity to win the game late."
"He located his fastball very well and mixed in his curveball just enough to not let them sit on the fastball," Berg added.
