Tours and activities for college-bound students
During August 5-9, hundreds of college-seeking students and their families will participate in what is becoming a rite of summer - Iowa Private College Week, sponsored by the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (IAICU). Throughout the week, Buena Vista University will join each of Iowa's other 27 participating private college campuses in hosting tours and activities for college-bound students from Iowa and surrounding states.
During Iowa Private College Week, each campus conducts daily tours. In addition, visitors can attend free information sessions twice daily at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. throughout Iowa Private College Week. Prospective students and their families can meet current students and faculty and learn about academic programs and financial aid packages.
At the first college the students visit, they will receive a passport to use for stamps, which allow them to apply to the schools they visit without paying application fees. With three or more stamps (limit two per day), any participating Iowa college or university will waive application fees.
"Iowa Private College Week gives students and families a chance to explore a range of campuses," said Dr. Frederick V. Moore, president of Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa, and IAICU chair. "Studies show that early college visits are key to choosing a school. Families can take this time to explore the possibilities without any commitment or obligation."
Some students and families find that financing a college education presents the greatest challenge in the search for the right school. "Each year, I talk to people who don't think they can afford to attend private college," said Douglas Bowman, dean of admission and financial aid at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, and chair of the Iowa Private College Week planning committee. "Iowa Private College Week presents an ideal opportunity to talk about all of the financial resources available to students."
Last year, Iowa Private College Week generated 3,320 campus visits to Iowa's private colleges and universities. Students can register for the tours through any of the participating schools or at the IAICU web site, www.dontbeanumber.com.
