N-F wins a pair
It was a pretty successful weekend for the Storm Lake softball team as it won three of four games in the inaugural Tornado Classic played on Friday and Saturday at the Field of Dreams.
Storm Lake dropped its first game of the tournament 3-1 in nine innings to Carroll Kuemper, but rebounded to beat Granville Spalding 10-3, Schaller-Crestland 4-3 and Okoboji 3-2.
Storm Lake had four hits against Kuemper. The Tornadoes scored a run in the seventh inning to tie the game. Billie Blanchard doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Heather Storm.
Trish Halder took the loss, allowing four hits, one earned run, walked none and struck out seven.
Kuemper scored two unearned runs in the ninth inning to take the lead for good.
Storm Lake totaled 11 hits against Granville Spalding. Storm, Molly Daniels, Chelsea Anderson and Anna Paulsen all had two hits apiece.
Blanchard drove in three runs, including a two-run single. Paulsen, Halder and Mel Fisher were credited with two RBIs apiece. Halder and Anderson each scored three runs.
Halder pitched the win, giving up three earned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out nine.
Storm Lake beat Schaller-Crestland despite getting just four hits. Fisher delivered an RBI single and an RBI double for the Tornadoes. Stacy Schmidt had an RBI single as well. The Tornadoes scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead before the Wildcats scored a run in the seventh.
Paulsen picked up the win. She allowed eight hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out six over seven innings.
Erica Willer took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out two.
Courtney Whitmore and Willer each had two hits apiece. Whitmore had an RBI triple.
The Tornadoes collected six hits against Okoboji. Schmidt and Daniels each had two. Storm drove in three runs, including a two-run single.
Paulsen allowed five hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out two.
Storm Lake is now 20-12 overall on the season.
Newell-Fonda participated in the Tornado Classic and won two of three games. The Mustangs were defeated by Denison-Schleswig 13-0, but beat Spirit Lake 4-2 and Rockwell City-Lytton 13-0.
The Mustangs were stymied on one hit by Denison. Amanda Devereaux had a single. Ashley Hetrick took the loss, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs.
Newell-Fonda was victimized by seven errors.
The Mustangs had four hits against Spirit Lake. Destiny Sievers delivered a two-run double, while Ashley Loos added an RBI single. Erin Kies had a triple.
Hanna Reis picked up the win. She allowed four hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out two.
Newell-Fonda romped past Rockwell City-Lytton 13-0, collecting 10 hits in the game. Kristen Culp had two doubles, scored two runs, and drove in two runs. Sara Larsen also had two hits, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.
Erin Kies had a double and a triple and drove in a run. Devereaux roped a two-run double. Emily Koster added an RBI single.
Hetrick pitched a five-hit shutout, walking none and striking out five for the Mustangs, now 21-7 overall.
